Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s I was a mid to late teen who frequented Medusa’s. I loved the big dance room, but I also loved just hanging out in the video room seeing videos to songs you knew but you couldn’t see on TV. Now with YouTube, we’re able to see those videos again. I’ll try to post one a week from those that I can remember, but let me know if you have any others you’d like to see. I may also post videos from bands that were frequently shown, but videos not shown in the video room. Enjoy.

Thank you for posting these videos! I used to go to Medusa’s when I was only 14 years old and absolutely loved the whole experience. I know I was probably the youngest person in the entire place but it didn’t matter, because it really affected me for good as it was my first introduction to anything “alternative” to what I saw on MTV and heard on the radio. It seemed the club closed down soon after I discovered it. I only remember vaguely what they played in the video room, but some of what stands out are “Right Here, Right Now” by Jesus Jones, “Unknown Soldier” by the Doors, “Down In It” by Nine Inch Nails, and “People are Still Having Sex,” by LaTour. Keep posting these videos and thanks for keeping the memory of this place alive. Many who went to Medusa’s I’m sure have not forgotten what a great club this was. Chicago needs to resurrect this place!
Can you post Gene Loves Jezebel, “Desire”
or “Ceremony” by Joy Division
Great idea. I always thought it would be cool if someone rendered a 3d model of the place. There had to be at least a few future graphic artists in that crowd.
Omigosh, Squeeze forwarded this to me and now I’m waxing nostalgic about the video room and Muskie’s cheese fries. My strongest impression was the Skinny Puppy “Worlock” video with the knife going up and down. Little did I know that I ended up loving the band much later on. On the other hand, I vaguely remembered a My Bloody Valentine video. Damn place closed down just as I started going too.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I remember Medusa’s video room and how unbelievable it was at the time. What experiences when I was 17 – going to Medusa’s. I saw Pink Floyd’s The Wall there for the first time too. WOW!
Thanks everyone for the feedback. I went there from 1987 to probably around 1991. Does anyone know what year it closed? I remember when I heard it had closed and that they were turning it into condos, but I can’t remember what year it might have been. By 1992, I was “of age” so I was going to Shelter and Crobar at that point. BTW, does anyone remember The Limelight on Dearborn at Ontario. And we also went to Red Dog over in Bucktown when we got older.
Muskies cheese fries… That brings back memories.
Thanks for the requests. I’ll try to add some of them soon.
I was a regular there from 85 to 1990.
I wish someone would create a club like Medusa’s, complete with the same music and juice bar….
Does anyone know of any other online groups dedicated to this community? Would love to see any photos
I have a podcast dedicated to the music of Medusa’s (and more), please check it out and forward any song suggestions.

This is fantastic. Someone mentioned Medusa’s to me the other day and got me all nostalgic. I hung out there from about 1984 until I was old enough to move on to other clubs like Shelter, Clubland, Berlin, Crobar. What a great memory. I wish I could find some photos of the place. Anyone remember Sugar, the “bouncer”?
Steve, great link! I think that all those songs are great. I will try to come up with some more and let you know.
Thanks for sharing!
For those of you with a Facebook account who are waxing nostalgic for the old Medusa’s, join the Facgroup “Medusa’s on Sheffield”.

Good idea on the video web site. I used to go to Medusa’s a lot and hang out in the video room. So many cool videos. Great place to hang out. They used to close it with a video from Dean and the Weenies F*** You from Mondo New York.
